We compared the biggest U.S. cities based on 20 indicators of an ideal LGBTQ metropolis, such as anti-discrimination policies, the share of gay households, and LGBTQ help resources.
We also factored in affordability, LGBTQ-friendly health protect access, and Pride-readiness.

The top of our ranking is dominated by liberal strongholds prefer San Francisco (No. 1), Washington (No. 2), and Denver (No. 4). These cities tend to be the most progressive — at least at the municipal level — so feel free to tell “gay” here. As a masc presenting lesbian, I always want to explore to LGBTQ+ kind destinations. Meanwhile, as someone who travels full-time, Im privileged to have visited many US cities.
With that first-hand truth and experience, here are what I believe to be the most amiable LGBTQ+ cities in the United States.
1. San Francisco, California
San Francisco is one of the most quintessential gay cities in the Joined States. Popular things to see and do in the city include:
- The Golden Gate Bridge
- Alcatraz
- Lombard Street
San Francisco also benefits from fantastic Queer bars, clubs and annual events. For example, the Event that takes place here in June dates back more than 50 years.
2. New York Metropolis, New York
New York City has an extensive history of LGBTQ+ advocacy and community. Famous Gay historical sites in the city include:
- Stonewall Inn
- Christopher Park
- NYC AIDS Memorial
Given New York Citys deep Queer history, its no surprise its one of the most LGBTQ+ cities in the United States.

Small towns are all about your neighbors, and when big hearts are open on Main Road, everyone benefits. We’re happy to share this listing of the best small towns for Homosexual folks in the U.S. because we know home is where we can be ourselves. In these small-scale burgs, gay-owned businesses abound—or maybe there’s just one, and that’s okay. Besides annual Pride celebrations, there are events around the rainbow community fond of drag shows, book clubs, and history tours. And if you’re not lucky enough to dwell in one of these towns, gay travelers are welcomed with gay-friendly accommodations. Time to novel a visit!
