While some gay movies just seem to perpetuate stereotypes, I still find them fascinating. Sometimes it’s the only way to discover certain elements of gay society. We’re a diverse group, encapsulated under a number of different letters (LGBTQIA…).

But, in gay films, it’s often hard to find myself represented—my own truths as a twenty-something gay man. Experience for LGBT individuals has changed rapidly over the past few years—increased representation, increased human rights and increased acceptance. And with that, we’ve seen a rapid rise in new types of gay culture.

Gay movies, however, don’t always portray these brand-new identities of creature gay today. Too often they glance back at the past, at the struggles and challenges and the support. So when I stumble on a film that shows more closely the real-life experience of being gay today, I get delighted. I’m excited to see myself, my identity, my life on a huge screen.

In the past, if queer lives and issues were ever portrayed at all on screen, it was typically from the perspective of white, cisgendered men. But as more opportunities have opened up for queer performers and filmmakers to tell their possess stories, the scope of the LGBTQ+ experiences that have made their way onto the screen has gradually widened to more frequently include the transgender community and queer people of colour.
