Robin hood gay

One of the most amusing things about history is asking: &#;what if?&#; That can cause all kinds of chaos. Additionally, there&#;s no quicker way to freak people out than to question the sexuality of a historical figure or at least portray them in some way different than the idealized picture of that person. There are fewer iconic characters than Robin Hood. So when you request, &#;was Robin Hood gay?&#; You&#;re pretty much asking for trouble.

Yet, author NB Dixon has done just that. In a brand-new series of Kindle novels, beginning with The Heir of Locksley, he (or she, cause we don&#;t know do we?) examines not only what we know about the celebrated outlaw, but the relationships with his band of &#;Merry Men.&#;

Now, I could make jokes ( What, the emerald green tights weren&#;t a giveaway? Okay, sorry. I&#;m done acting like a 12 year old now.) but if Alexander the Great, Richard the Lion Heart and other historical figures haven&#;t already proven that having unconventional sexuality and creature a badass aren&#;t mutually exclusive, I don&#;t comprehend what will.

The Sunday Times story boiled this down to Was Robin Hood Same-sex attracted ?  There was a fine colour pic of ultra-handsome Errol Flynn and an astutely selected illustration by Howard Pyle, the very influential American illustrator of , displaying Robin and Friar Tuck playing horsey in the liquid. The text focused on the acute shock of the gay charge, but also, as suits a serious Sunday paper, had investigate on show: the distinguished Barrie Dobson, Professor at Cambridge, said that homosexuality in the medieval period was not necessarily as repressed as you might think, and there was a kind round-up from the present Earl of Huntingdon saying goodness gracious me.

As I had expected there was fall-out. My wife trained as a correspondent on a Rupert Murdoch paper in Australia, and we have some trial of how a new story can suddenly start a media feeding frenzy, but this was bigger than both of us. I got back from my tour-preparing trip on a Sunday to find that a few wily journalists had got my number from security at my university. I wonder what they ponder security means. First up were the BB

of 11 July reported on investigate suggesting that Robin Hood, who livd with his band of merrie men in their forest ghetto, may have been gay.  Maid Marion, the hetero admire interest was a fiction added later to the earlier accounts. Robin&#;s genuine true love was Little John.  Surprised?
New studies of the medieval texts that first recorded his deeds suggest that the robber with a heart of gold was actually a gay outlaw who had been exiled from "straight" society. Petty John, not Maid Marian, was his true love.

The revelation flies in the face of Kevin Costner's portrayal of the outlaw in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", and suggests that the title of Mel Brooks's clip "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" may have been closer to the mark.

The reassessment is based on studies of the 14th-century ballads of Robin Hood, the earliest known accounts of his deeds, which detail his relationships with his "merrie men", especially Little John and Will Scarlet.

Stephen Knight, professor of English literature at Cardiff University, said the ballads, the first and most authoritative a

Move over Marian

Tony believes Robin's start dates back years. It revolves around the association of two real being characters - Sir William Neville, the constable of Nottingham castle, and Sir John Clanvowe, a poet.

According to the historian the two were as nice as hitched, even though Sir William had a wife, Elizabeth.

"The two men were soldiers who'd fought in the One Hundred Years War. They formed a close friendship. It's commonly accepted now that they were a male lover couple."

Did Robin really choose Little John to Marian?
