“The Hayloft was essentially a stand up exclude with sawdust on the floor, but they did possess rows of benches as they had a large film screen and would show classic Hollywood movies,” Adkins says. “Its other benefit was that it was an after hours bar. If you didn’t encounter anyone by 2 a.m. at any of the other places and didn’t go out for breakfast to DuPar’s, Charles’, or Tiny Naylor’s, but were still looking to meet someone, you found yourself after hours at the Hayloft.”

“The Apache, also famous for a while as Apache Territory, was smaller and more intimate than Oil Can Harry’s. It provided a more likely place to actually assemble and talk with someone,” Adkins says.
“At Oil Can Harry’s, you had to go outside to the front steps to chat to someone, or smoke if that was your vice. But at Apache, there was a miniature patio leading to the entrance,” he says. “It was fenced so it wasn’t exposed to the avenue. At Oil Can Harry’s, you could count on being verbally harassed from a passing car, or worse yet, have something thrown at you. In its last days, Apache installed T.V. monitors playing adult movies and had go-go boys dancing. The two brothers who owned Apache expanded and opened a second bar in Hollywood, but in period both bars closed. Later, the Ventura Boulevard location became another gay lock, Everybody’s.” (Adkins, Richard )

For me, one of the optimal places to see my friends tends to be a lock. That’s how in Reseda, the neighborhood’s first and only queer bar, was born. Owner Stephen Miele recalls how his comrade created the name using a play on words that fit the environment he wanted for his new bar. Simply place, he wanted to run a local watering hole where you could go and see your friends.
I went to on a Friday night, and people began to trickle in as it grew later. The bar was dark, moody, and musky. The welcoming vibe is by plan and you feel it the minute you walk in. Miele has carefully curated a approachable atmosphere where queer people can feel safe in more ways than one.

Gay Los Angeles
West Hollywood is like an autonomous queer city, with Santa Monica Boulevard concentrating a massive number of gay bars and clubs. You'll locate other gay venues around Los Angeles, especially in Silver Lake and the San Fernando Valley, but you can stay in West Hollywood for weeks and still not life all of the area's gay hotspots and parties.
