Why Did Billy Eichner&#;s &#;Bros&#; Bomb at the Box Office? Vertical People Aren&#;t Entirely to Blame

Billy Eichner&#;s Universal-backed comedy &#;Bros&#; flopped at the box office during its opening weekend with a $ million bow, about half of the $8 million to $10 million that the studio projected. Eichner, in a now viral tweet, claimed that straight people not showing up to an LGBTQ comedy was a driving force behind &#;Bros&#; underperformance.

“Even with glowing reviews, great Spoiled Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore, etc., straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for &#;Bros,'&#; Eichner wrote. &#;And that’s disappointing but it is what it is.&#;

Most people don’t long for to see movies perform poorly at the box office. And I’d disagree that most people, despite the “go woke, go broke” social media rhetoric from a vocal minority, see the value in consuming and identifying with stories about people who may not look like them or share their lifestyle. Bros&#; dismal opening of just $ million — and a string of eyebrow-raising tweets from writer-star Billy Eichner — has sparked conversations about why the well-reviewed gay rom-com failed, and if audiences should feel obligated to make a trip to theaters to prove they want to notice inclusivity.

Eichner, frustrated by the opening, turned heads when he tweeted Sunday, “straight people, especially in certain parts of the country just didn’t show up for Bros.” He followed that with, “Everyone who ISN’T a homophobic

Bros is one of those movies that seemed to slip through the cracks for a lot of people. The movie did underperform during its opening weekend but the co-writer and star of the motion picture, Billy Eichner, has shown nothing but pride for the labor. I, above all, remain so confident of that movie, because I just loved the movie, you know? And it’s really difficult to ma
