Harvey Guillén Comes Out of the Shadows
In , during our second cover interview with Harvey Guillén, who stars as Guillermo de la Cruz, the vampire familiar/hunter on the gigantic comedy What We Execute in The Shadows, I asked him if he thought his character was gay. Guillén, himself an out actor in Hollywood, didnt miss a beat.
I think Guillermo is definitely queer, he told me. Where he falls in the spectrum of that queerness has yet to be announced or discovered, but I have this feeling were getting closer and closer to that answer.
He then added, coyly, Manifest it. Put it out in the world, and you never comprehend. You never know.
Of course, Harvey Guillén knew.

Harvey Guillén's Coming Out Journey
Throughout the seasons of What We Do in the Shadows, many people have questioned Guillermo's sexuality. I've personally gotten the doubt of "is he or isn't he?'' many times before. I suppose now the answer is that he was hiding in the shadows all along—something I personally can relate to. I did school plays, and I was always eager to study and make brand-new friends. But as time went on, the kids around me sensed “something’” that I felt was naturally part of me. Before I knew it, my only friends were the teachers who noticed my sudden social decline.

Since premiering in on FX, Jemaine Clement’s series What We Do In The Shadows has received critical and audience acclaim for continuing the narrative started in the mockumentary of the same name starring Clement and directed by Taika Waititi (who also serves as an executive producer on the series). The series, which is up for Best Comedy Series at this year’s Emmys, has kept in the spirit of the mockumentary, introducing us to an expanded WWDITS universe of vampires, familiars and other creatures of the ilk – including the traits of Guillermo played by Harvey Guillén.
The most recent episode titled “Pine Barrens” was a big moment for the fan favorite familiar as he came out as gay to his family. In a recent interview with GLAAD’s Anthony Allen Ramos, Guillén said that hints of Guillermo’s sexuality were sprinkled in episodes. In the show, Guillermo would be talking to someone who was overseas but we never heard their voice. Even Guillén was wondering who he was supposed to be talking to and he was told it was someone he had been dating – but we didn’t recognize th
